Our mission is to educate, inspire, empower, and mentor women and girls in our community through the Empower Girls in STEM mentorship program, Leadership workshops, awards/recognition programs, teen empowerment workshops and support for women who are victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse.
Women with a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) background are a key resource in today’s knowledge-based economies. There is rising demand for IT Professionals, and job growth in this area is being driven by increases in female employment. But women remain vastly underrepresented in STEM studies at both secondary and tertiary levels of education and in the overall technical workforce. Greater female participation in computer science, engineering and technology-oriented jobs would spur innovation and economic advances in all sectors. This is why our organization ANWEP, takes its Mentorship mission very seriously.
The key to ensure that aspiring women scientists stay in STEM, are mentors that they can emulate. The importance of mentorship and having female role models should not be underestimated. As more women pursue higher education and enter careers, younger girls will have role models to show them that higher education is attainable for females. Also, these role models will demonstrate that pursuing education opens doors to opportunities otherwise unavailable to girls.
